On March 28, 2025, various NENUPHAR partners hosted a Workshop with sister projects at FIGAN 2025, a leading agricultural and livestock fair in Zaragoza (Spain). This event was organized by CAMPAG, CIRCE, and BETA and brought together experts from four European projects focused on the circular economy, waste valorization, and sustainable energy in agriculture and livestock farming. The workshop served as an ideal platform to engage with key stakeholders from the sector, leveraging FIGAN’s extensive reach and industry relevance.
The workshop, promoted by NENUPHAR and supported by sister projects GREENHOOD, HARVREST, and LIVE COVET, explored the challenges and solutions in managing agricultural and livestock waste in the Ebro Basin. Presentations highlighted key environmental, technological, and legislative issues, along with sustainable practices for nutrient recovery, waste management, and bioenergy production.
The workshop featured the following sessions:
Challenges and Opportunities in the Ebro Basin:
- Waste mapping in Aragón and Catalonia, highlighting the environmental pressures caused by agricultural and livestock activities.
- Regulatory considerations and barriers in the valorization of livestock waste and the recovery of nutrients.
Sustainable Livestock Farming and Nutrient Optimization:
- Exploring technological solutions for nutrient management and how these can support sustainable farming practices across the region.
- Key initiatives for reducing agricultural waste, including biofertilizer production and nutrient recovery technologies.
Biogas Valorization and Fertilizer Production:
- Demonstrations of biogas upgrading to biomethane on farms, and a success case of its injection into the gas grid as a renewable energy source.
- The production of tailored biofertilizers from livestock digestate, offering sustainable alternatives to synthetic fertilizers.
NENUPHAR project was represented by Alessandro Carmona (CIRCE), project coordinator, who presented the project, and the waste mapping analysis made for the regions of Aragon and Catalonia in NENUPHAR. Also, by Elena Laborda (CIRCE), who presented the legislative analysis developed for the Ebro River Basin, and its barriers and opportunities for the valorization of livestock waste and the recovery of nutrients. Moreover, Maria Perez (GESTCOMPOST) presented the progresses made in the NENUPHAR pilot in Pina de Ebro (Zaragoza) regarding the upgrading of the stripping technology for nutrients recovery.
By showcasing innovative solutions in waste valorization, nutrient recovery, and bioenergy production from the participant projects, the workshop underscored the importance of cross-project collaboration for advancing circular economy practices in the agriculture sector.
