On the Island of Bornholm located in the Baltic Sea, NENUPHAR project partners will be working on addressing the lack of governance solutions for the treatment and posterior application of waste water sludge – an important source of Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorous (P) pollution on the island.
Bornholm being a site of two large industrial activities – a machine factory and a pig slaughterhouse – the reduction of the N and P content of the sludge from its wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is an important issue. Current governance frameworks do not allow to adequately treat the problem, however, with examples including dairy food cooperatives not allowing the use of their sludge as fertilizers.
The main goal of this project is to identify and analyse governance solutions for reducing N and P emissions from the island’s WWTPs. Those efforts will be supplemented on a technical level by limiting N and P emissions through reduction of excess water in the plants, assessing the plant to rebuild another wastewater treatment plant, as well as maximise the N/P recovery for recycling.
