The evening featured a full screening of “The Green Tide” a powerful adaptation of the investigative graphic novel Algues vertes, l’histoire interdite by journalist Inès Léraud and illustrator Pierre Van Hove, directed by Pierre Jolivet.

This gripping film sheds light on the phenomenon of “green tides” in Brittany and the environmental and political silence surrounding agricultural pollution. It also draws attention to a broader European issue—over 80% of marine waters and more than 30% of coastal and inland waters in the EU are affected by eutrophication, largely driven by nutrient pollution from agriculture.

After a small reception hosted in the foyer of the NOVA Cinema, EEB’s Heard of Nature and Health, Faustine Bas-Defossez launched the evening with no less than 90 participants from various stakeholders’ groups.

The event concluded with an inspiring discussion with the film director, Pierre Jolivet, accompanied by Sara Johansson from the European Environmental Bureau and Lucille Labayle from Surfrider Foundation Europe, which generated tremendous interest and reflection among attendees. Many of them shared how moved they were by the story told in the movie: how the activities of a few are actually harming the environment, human and non-human lives, which all suffer from the impacts of nutrients pollution and resulting green algae.

We thank all contributors and participants for their insights, energy, and collaboration. Stay tuned for upcoming activities and follow-ups. A particular thanks to Pierre Jolivet, for coming expressly to Brussels for what was his last travel related to the movie “Les Algues vertes”.
