Cyprus

On the island of Cyprus, NENUPHAR partner organisations are working to address and limit N/P leakages from the pig production sector, sewage sludge management, as well as wastewater treatment of a halloumi cheese industry. This work will then feed into the development of an action plan for innovative governance solution and analyzing its impacts on three sectors.

Cyprus’ wastewater and collection treatment problem is considerable, having the lowest rate of compliance with Article 3 of the EU’s Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD). N/P pollution plays an important role – 49% of its municipal solid waste being pig waste and with agricultural diffuse pollution accounting for 47% of all pressures on country’s surface waters. Barriers to solving that problem are numerous – lacking infrastructure, administrative coordination, incentives for waste management and application of ‘Extended Producer Responsibility’ (EPR) schemes. NENUPHAR project will seek to assess those barriers through the three sectors listed above.
